Rudy Gay: Another Curious Case

Probably a BRICK
Despite the Raptors initial success after acquiring Rudy Gay, the team has now taken a step back thanks to the struggles of their new franchise player.  Let's go back to the night he first put on the Raptors uniform, February 1st against the red-hot Clippers. The excitement around the team was palpable, the national media had their eye on the often overlooked franchise and the fan base in Toronto had a reason to be excited.  A player with Gay's ability are rare and he was a Raptor, surely a reason to be excited! Then came the actual game and it was a thing of beauty. Despite not having Chris Paul, the Clippers were still thought to be the favorites, but Toronto ran over the "other team from LA" in a 98-73 drubbing.  Gay was the teams' high scorer with 20, he shot 50% from the field (8-16) including three of six from downtown.  Since that game he has shown flashes of brilliance, but unfortunately for the Raptors and their fans, Rudy has not been living up to the hype.

There is no question that in the NBA, a good team needs to have a wing player capable of scoring in one-on-one situations late in the clock.  Rudy Gay can do this and it showed in his greatest Raptor moment so far.  His 17 foot jumper in OT against the Pacers, one of the NBAs best teams in my opinion, gave the Raptors a 2 point lead with under 2 seconds to go.  This is what Rudy Gay can do, he can mesmerize you with his talent and his ability to get a shot off against a good defender, such as Paul George in the video below. He tantalized fans even more, by hitting yet another game winner just 2 games later against Denver. If you look closer at those games though, he shot just a combined 15 of 39 for a 38.4% clip.  Sadly, this is about what he has been shooting for the Raptors since they acquired him.

Gay has shot a lowly 39.3% since he has become a Raptor, just a horrible number for a player shooting as much as Gay (nearly 20 times a game! *gasp*).  What's worse? Gay is shooting a pitiful 24.1% from three point land in that same period yet still attempting over 4 threes per game. Even worse? Yes, one last nauseating statistic is that Gay has not shot 50% or better from the field in any game for the Raptors since the first game he played against the Clippers. The Raptors got off to a hot start with the new band, winning 6 of their first 8, however, since then the team has dropped 6 of 7 including 5 straight.  Could it be Andrea Bargnani's fault like all Raptor fans are hoping? Yes it could, but Gay's play isn't helping matters.  There is so good news here though: The Raptors were not going to make a big run this year, the just had too big of a whole to climb out of, but an off season of hard work and a few additional pieces could see this team be a player for a postseason spot next year. Gay has shown good defense since his acquisition and his effort level is certainly not in question.  The actual question is and has always been with Rudy Gay: Can his production equal his talent level? Only time will tell.

Why the Rudy Gay Deal is a great move for Memphis(And Rudy Too)

(Rudy Gay has played his last game for the Memphis Grizzlies.)

Two days ago, Rudy Gay tweeted this statement:

"I'm long overdue."

And while Rudy was most likely not speaking about his time in Memphis(or maybe he was, the writing was not only on the wall but all over the internet), he was correct in his assumptions. Rudy Gay was one of the highest paid players in the NBA this year, and has been since he signed the five year, $80 Million deal with Memphis in 2010.

The deal included the stipulation that Rudy Gay's contract would increase by 10.5% each year, meaning that the Grizzlies were on schedule to pay Gay close to $17 Million in 2014, and $19 Million in 2015. While Gay has slowly become one of the faces of the franchise, he was simply not earning that type of money. To give you a comparison to other players:

Rudy Gay is currently ranked 27th among all Small Forwards in the NBA(yes, just small forwards) in PER, with a 14.39. (This is hugely ironic by the way, as John Hollinger, the man pretty much responsible for trading Gay, invented that stat.) The two players who surround Rudy Gay are Kwahi Leonard of the Spurs (26th, 14.43) and Dorell Wright of the Sixers (28th, 14.12).

(Gay Simply wasn't earning his paycheck in the minds of John Hollinger and Memphis.)

While Rudy is set to make right around $15 Million this year, Dorell Wright will make $4.1 Million this year, and Kwahi Leonard will make $1.8 Million. Not really getting any bang for your buck are you?

Rudy was  averaging career lows in free throw percentage and field goal percentage(his field goal percentage is down from 45% to 40%, making almost a shot less per game) and thus his scoring is down as well. Gay also doesn't fit in the Grizzlies scheme in the way that your highest paid player should. With him not shooting well and pounding the ball, teams could sag into Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol, preventing the Grizzlies from being able to play any inside-out or pick and roll with any efficiency. Also, with O.J. Mayo gone, Tony Allen was the other scoring option if Gay couldn't get open and the ball couldn't get down low. Needless to say, it was time for a time to rebuild this offense.

While Zach Randolph's name has been thrown around in trade rumors as well, the Grizzlies seemed to have built themselves for long term. They grab an expiring contract in Tayshaun Prince(who could actually help them on the defensive side of the ball, another area where Gay was lacking), and a young player in Ed Davis who isn't well known now, but will be soon now that his energy and solid defense has moved south of the border. Austin Daye has also been looking for a new place to prove himself, and after the Grizzlies trade last week, there are room for role players on that bench. They also have alot more cap space to work with in 2014.

Don't feel bad for Rudy Gay though. He gets a new home in Toronto that is going to feature him as their star, and will most likely turn to him when making certain decisions. He also teams up with Kyle Lowry, whom is well known to be one of Gay's closest friends in the NBA. A starting five of Lowry, Derozan, Gay, Terrence Ross and Amir Johnson is a much better starting five than they started the day with.

The Raptors can rebuild their offense to play off of Gay(possibly in the way you see the Celtics do with Paul Pierce at times), and become extremely athletic. Don't be surprised if the Raptors make a small push here in the second half, and make sure to circle February 20th on your calendar. The Raptors and their new superstar head to Memphis.

First Trade Of The Year!!!!

A few weeks ago a rumor came out that Memphis was looking to clear salary in any way possible to get under the dread tax line. Since, Memphis is considered a small market their ownership group decided that paying the luxury tax this year and potentially becoming a repeat tax payer was something they were not willing to do (for a short explanation of the tax check out our Rudy Gay Piece). After this information leaked the rumor mill started to swirl, Rudy Gay was mentioned as being the most likely to move followed by the rumor that they were gauging Zach Randolph's interest around the league.

In the end, nothing so drastic as this happened. The Grizzlies decided to send out some of their back end rotation players, to get under the luxury tax. Doing this without sending away any of their stars has to be considered a major win for Memphis. Ken Berger of CBS broke the deal via a series of tweets:

League source confirms Grizzlies agree to send Marreese Speights, Josh Selby to Cavs for Jon Leuer. There is a pick involved in deal.
So full deal is Speights, Selby, Ellington and pick to Cleveland for Jon Leuer. Welcome to luxury taxonomics.

In this deal Cleveland is showing  the benefits of being under the cap in the current NBA landscape. In the NBA trades have to match salary wise, meaning the value of the two side's contracts exchanged must be within 125% + $100,000 of each other. The exception to this is if one team is under the salary cap, in which case they can take on more salary than the other team. Cleveland essentially traded it's cap space for three players that will be in their rotation immediately as a well as a draft pick.

As Ken Berger mentioned in one of his tweets this deal is the type fans will become familiar with after the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, and its new punitive tax. In the new NBA, cap space has become even more valuable with teams looking to shed payroll to get under the tax.

This move was a win for Memphis because they were able to get under the tax without giving up one of their core starters. Any deal in which they gave up Rudy Gay or Zach Randolph to get under the tax would only bring back 75 cents on the dollar for these two stars. In avoiding moving one of these pieces Memphis was able to get under the tax while keeping its title hopes alive.

The deal is a win for Cleveland because they have added three promising young players, and a draft pick for a player that wasn't in their rotation. Ellington is a very good shooter who can space the floor, Selby is a young scoring guard who can help the Cavs lackluster offense, and Speights is an offensive minded big man who can score in the post. Cleveland has found itself struggling on the offensive end many a night this year, these three players will help alleviate this problem   In the new cost conscious NBA it was a win for both teams.

Southwest Division roundup: Trade Winds in Memphis while the Rockets continue to roll

While San Antonio has clearly separated themselves from the field in this division, the Grizzlies and Rockets continue to make noise of their own. Houston is creating buzz for all the right reasons, as they have won 10 of 12 including 5 straight.  Memphis, one of the elite defense teams in the league (more to come on this later), has been in the middle of the NBA rumor central for the past 48 hours (Rudy Gay and now rumblings about Zach Randolph being moved). In this roundup we will look at each team's recent performance as well as explore some of the trade rumors in Memphis.

San Antonio:

The Spurs lost 2 of 3 this week dropping games to both the Knicks and Hornets while they defeated the 76ers.  The weakness of this roster right now is that is has a difficult time matching up with elite athletes, especially at the front court position which leads to struggles rebounding the basketball. But honestly, that may be this teams' only short coming.  They are 4th in the NBA in offensive efficiency scoring 107.8 points per 100 possessions, while they are 5th in defensive efficiency giving up only 98.6 points per those same 100 possessions.  Only the LA Clippers have the same claim to being in the top 5 in both those categories.  That's elite company.  Further more for the Spurs, the rank fist overall in the NBA in assist rate (rate of assists per possession) and 3rd overall in true shooting percentage (weighted efficiency adjusting for three pointers and free throws). What this all tells me is that this is the epitome of a team.  They work together offensively making the extra pass, space the floor well using the strengths of each player to their advantage, and have crisp defensive rotations resulting in superb help defense. Clearly the best in this division, they are in the thick of it in the loaded western conference with arguably only the Clippers and Thunder looking like fellow contenders to get to the finals.

Memphis:

Memphis continues to play good ball, shutting opponents down defensively while grinding out offensive possessions. Now second in the league in defensive efficiency allowing a paltry 96.5 points per 100 possessions, this team's identity starts and ends on the defensive end.  Anchored by Tony Allen on the wing and Marc Gasol in the interior this team swarms the ball forcing opponents to shoot over the top of the their defenders. They rarely allow layups and they allow Mike Conley, who has some of the quickest hands in basketball, to go after anyone dribbling the ball in the lane.  Conley is another defensive stalwart who averages 2.4 steals a game and has been one of the best theifs in the NBA over the past few seasons. This week we also saw one of the streakiest shooters in the NBA catch fire as Wayne Ellington absolute made it rain for the Grizz, torching the Kings to the tune of 26 points on an unreal 10-11 from the field including 6 of 7 from downtown. Watching an elite athlete get into a zone is both terrifying (knowing you could never do that) and electrifying (also knowing this is something you can't do), but either way it was fun to see for a brief stretch of time.  Now for Memphis fans, if only Rudy Gay could get into a zone like that.....Which bring me to the next discussion point, the trade winds in Memphis.

As my colleague Evan pointed out yesterday, the need to move Rudy Gay is based on the fact that he earns too much money for what he is giving this team as his salary forces the team over the cap. See Evan's article for an in depth look: http://pickandpopdiaries.blogspot.com/2013/01/rudy-gay-trade-derby.html

Basically this season a team will pay one dollar of tax for every dollar they are over the cap, but in future seasons this changes.  h/t to Larry Coon and CBA FAQ as he has this chart listed for what tax paying teams will pay in the future.

Team salary above tax levelNon-repeaterRepeater
LowerUpperTax rateIncremental maximumTax rateIncremental maximum
$0$4,999,999$1.50$7.5 million$2.50$12.5 million
$5,000,000$9,999,999$1.75$8.75 million$2.75$13.75 million
$10,000,000$14,999,999$2.50$12.5 million$3.50$17.5 million
$15,000,000$19,999,999$3.25$16.25 million$4.25$21.25 million
$20,000,000N/A$3.75, and increasing $.50 for
each additional $5 million.
N/A$4.75, and increasing $.50 for
each additional $5 million.
N/A

While this is a bit confusing no doubt, it means that it will become more and more expensive to be over the cap, forcing teams like the Grizz to dump salary before the tax is levied on them.  Rudy Gay is an exceptional talent.  He has the length, athleticism  speed, and versatility to be an elite player on both ends of the floor, but so far in his career he has not been able to find the consistency that validates him being a max contract player. In fact this year he has regressed offensively to the point where he is shooting a career low field goal percentage of 40.8% which includes shooting just 34.8% in his last 5 ball games.  What could the Grizz expect back in return for Gay? Well since they are trying to dump salary for an overpriced player, certainly not equal value and probably a poor contract in return.  I won't repeat the work that Evan did yesterday as he threw out some trade ideas, but it would make a lot of sense for Phoenix to get involved as well as Boston in a three team trade if it means it can acquire a legitimate center.  Also the Kings and the Bucks could become interested if the price is right.

Rudy Gay isn't the only Grizzly getting talked about in trade rumors.  The Memphis Commercial-Appeal also said that the team has had primarily discussions about moving Zach Randolph.  While like Gay, Randolph makes upwards of 17 million dollars, he, unlike Rudy Gay has been playing good basketball.  There is also the difficulty in moving him as he has had two major knee injuries and is no longer a young player (he is 31). Anyway let's explore a trade possibility for Randolph to Sacramento which is the team mentioned in the preliminary discussion for a trade for a ZBO:

The Grizz Get: Thomas Robinson, Marcus Thornton, and Tyreke Evans
The Kings get: Zach Randolph and Tony Wrotten

The Grizzlies would certainly not be as good as a team without the interior presence of Randolph this year, but this is a solid haul for a team looking to dump salary.  They would get a solid PF option in Robinson, as well as a high level combo guard in Evans.  They would also get the unconscious scorer off the bench, the OJ Mayo type player they miss, in Marcus Thornton who can just light it up from downtown. This would also open up extended playing time for Darrell Arthur. Most importantly from the Grizz prospective, this would save the team $1.5 MM in player salaries as well as taxable dollars over the salary cap.

The Kings get the best player in this deal and someone they can use to sell tickets.  If they can keep DeMarcus Cousins then they will have one of, if not the best, rebounding front lines in the NBA. They also get a project PG who has the size and athleticism to be a good player at the NBA level.

Houston Rockets:

Houston continues to play great basketball, winning 5 in a row and 10 of 12. In fact they have mixed two 5 game winning streaks sandwiched around a two game losing streak.  The only concerning point for the Rockets is that they are 1-9 against western conference playoff teams (if the playoff started right now). I think this is more attributed to lack of experience together rather than skill as this young team should be able to compete with better clubs once all of the new faces have meshed together over a longer period of time. James Harden looks to have reached super-star level officially now, averaging 26.6 a game, 5.4 dimes, and 4.2 rebounds as well as 1.9 steals. Those gaudy numbers are of course only on a small sampling of not even half an NBA season, and doubters will say he needs to do this for multiple seasons before he is assigned a super-star status,  but I believe he will.  Also in his last 5 games he is averaging 29.6 points on nearly 50% shooting.  He is elevating his play during a period in which he team is able to make a run.  I love this kid, and quite frankly I really like this team.  Omer Asik is a beast down low defensively and not enough can be said about his transformation on the offensive end making him a threat on both ends.  Jeremy Lin has played well since facing the Knicks and getting the pressure of seeing his old team off his chest.  Chandler Parsons, Marcus Morris, Tony Douglas and Carlos Delfino continue to play well too. They are first in the league in scoring at 106.8 a game as they get out on the fast break even on made baskets. This is  one of the most fun teams in the league to watch on a daily basis and opponents better bring there track shoes or they will be run out of the gym.

Dallas Mavericks:

This team is going in the wrong direction and quickly.  They have lost 9 of 10 while rumors of Dirk requesting a trade have surfaced on the internet.  While Dirk has shut down these rumors, it would make sense for one of the all-time greats heading into the twilight of his career to want to be a part of a winner, which Dallas does not look to be.  The problems in Big D are numerous.  They are third to last in the league in allowing points, as opponents score over 103 a game on them and they turn the ball over at a rate near the bottom of the league as well.  They have the worst rebounding differential of any team.  Jesus Christ, I could go on forever about their shortcomings.  This team is awful and needs to make a trade or two (or three or four...) to set itself up the future.  They have no shot of being a contender this season.

New Orleans:

The Hornets had an impressive win over the Spurs Monday and rookie Anthony Davis finally looks to be coming out of his slump.  After struggling the previous week, Davis scored 17, grabbed 9 boards and registered 3 steals showing an energy that had been missing his previous 4 games.  Also showing signs of life was the finally healthy Eric Gordon who dropped 24 points in that game and despite shooting a woeful 35% so far in his 4 games back, looks to have his legs under him now.  The Hornets are certainly not a playoff team, but I look for them to play good ball in the coming weeks now that they have their #1 scorer back as well as a more confident Anthony Davis.

Rudy Gay Trade Derby

Rudy Gay is an extremely talented player with, elite upside that garnered a max contract of $80 Million over five years. Despite his athleticism being a sight to behold, he has yet to live up to his top earner billing. The Grizzlies have decided it is time to take offers on his huge contract. Memphis shopping Gay, however, is not indicative of his talent. This move would be financially motivated

(Skip this paragraph if you don't care why the Grizzlies are trying to shed payroll)
NBA teams are petrified of the luxury tax from the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. The two important features of the new CBA are a punitive tax and repeat offender tax. Below is a table showing the rates of tax for the new CBA. Essentially it means that for every dollar the team goes over the tax they have to pay 1.50 in taxes or 2.50 if they are a repeat offender, that is $5 or less over the tax. So if a team was $5 MM over the tax they would pay $7.5 MM in additional tax or $12.5 MM for a repeat offender.
Amount over tax thresholdStandard taxRepeat offender tax
$5 million or less$1.50$2.50
$5 million to $10 million$1.75$2.75
$10 million to $15 million$2.50$3.50
$15 million to $25 million$3.25$4.25
Simply put, this tax makes it significantly more expensive for teams to go over the threshold . This tax has made it so that only the teams with legitimate chances at the title are willing to pay the tax (that Dolan, Cuban and Buss). Although the Grizzlies are probably contenders, their recent swoon has caused ownership to question whether they want to pay the tax.  In any deal Memphis is looking to shed at least $4.6 million in salary to get under the tax level.

After Memphis beat the Spurs in the first round two years ago it was widely believed that they were ready to make the leap. The standard school of thought was that with Gay returning from injury the year after. the Grizz would be an elite team. Gay did come back, and they lost in the first round last year. This year with Gay, Memphis got off to their best start in franchise history. Since their 12-2 start Memphis has been just 10-8. Does this mean they are no longer an elite team? Probably not but that seems to be what ownership is thinking.

That is not to say Memphis isn't trying to get equal value in return for Rudy. The problem is that forcing the other team to take on $4.6 million in any deal is going to diminish Gay's value markedly. The Grizzlies are reported to be looking for three point shooting (to space the floor giving Randolph and Gasol more room to operate) and a first round pick in addition to $4.6 MM in savings.

Earlier this week Zach Lowe began the Gay rumor, while today Adrian Wojnarowski and Alex Kennedy produced articles mentioning the teams interested in. I will be going over each team rumored to inquire about Gay's availability and make up a fake trade that will use the guidelines mentioned in the previous paragraph.

The Boston Celtics
At first glace the Celtics make no sense. Boston is over the cap so they can not give Memphis the $4.6 million in savings they desire. That seems like a non-starter to any deal. However, when you look at the other teams rumored to be in on Gay they all have pieces that the Celtics could use. When taking this into consideration it becomes clear that Boston probably called Memphis, not for Gay but to be a part of a larger deal.

The Deal:

The Celtics need a center and Marcin Gortat is one of the best on the market. Memphis would get two very good three point shooting bench players to aid in their playoff run as well as a protected first from Phoenix and save $5.9 million. Phoenix would get what it wants in Rudy Gay and a project big to eventually replace Gortat. Would the Suns move Gortat or would losing Gortat negate trading for Gay? Is Phoenix willing to move Dudley, who is currently the heart and soul of their team? Does Boston have enough bench firepower to survive losing Terry? Does Memphis get cold feet when it finally comes time to pull the trigger?

The Sacramento Kings:
All reports out of Sacramento are that they are not moving DeMarcus Cousins. Along with that hurdle, the Kings have an ownership group that has money problems, which would make it seem unlikely that a deal is consummated. Most of the packages Sacramento would prefer sending would not be enough for Memphis. Even if the Kings were to move Cousins they would want to send back contracts that would negate the savings.

Sacramento showed that they were taking offers on former rookie of the year Tyreke Evans when they decided not to offer him an extension. His value is at a career low but could end up reaching his full potential on a different team. Thornton would provide the bench shooting that the Grizz need. Sacramento would be ecstatic to get Rudy Gay without giving up Cousins, but even I  still question whether ownership would foot the bill.

The Golden State Warriors
The Golden State Warriors are one of the best teams in the west. Let that sink in. For the first time in a while GSW will be buyers at the trade deadline. Rudy Gay would be a huge upgrade at small forward for a team that could use one. Gay would put them over the top and allow them to compete for home court advantage in the playoffs. Is the price of an upgrade at the three too high for Golden State?

This trade doesn't give Memphis the entire savings they would like causing them to make another move after.  Despite the lack of salary relief this deal would bring two good prospects to Memphis. In the end this probably is not enough for Memphis. In order to sweeten the pot Memphis could switch Harrison Barnes for Klay Thompson and then add Festus Ezeli. Four for one trades in the NBA are unlikely at best because the players cut to pair the roster down to 15 would still have fully guaranteed deals that would need to be paid (which could negate some of the salary savings).

Let me know what you think of these trades in the comments.

5. Jan 3rd @ NY Knicks 7:30

San Antonio feasted on inferior competition this week, rebounding from it's dismal previous week. While wins against New Orleans and the streaking Raptors were very much expected if not a sure thing, the Mavs, at least on paper looked to be there toughest test of the previous week.  The Spurs absolute dismantled Dallas, winning by 38 points.

The Spurs continue to win with a balanced attack unlike any other team.  In the three wins, the team had different high scorers and rebounders in all three games.  For the season, the Spurs have 6 players averaging double digits and Tiago Splitter at 9.4.   While this team looked bad last week, I  have renewed faith that this is the team to beat in the division.  I'd like to see them win 4 games this next week (I think they win only 3) and take down some better competition before I'm completely convinced they are true contenders.

Memphis:
Last Weeks Games: 1-2

Upcoming Games:
1. Dec 29th vs. Denver 8:00
2. Dec 31st @ Indiana 3:00
3. Jan 2nd vs. Boston 7:30

This was not Memphis' best week.  After showing a great defensive effort in smothering Dallas en route to a 10 point win, Memphis ran into the red hot Houston Rockets.  Memphis committed 19 turnovers in that game and made only 2 of 13 three point attempts.  The Rockets absolutely dominated the fast break, outscoring Memphis 33-3. While Memphis continues to be an excellent rebounding team with their huge front line of Gasol and Randolph, they don't have terrific athletes up front that can keep up with what smaller teams throw out.  Memphis needs to slow the game down and rely on their on ball defense causing pressure and therefore turnovers or poor shots.  Memphis lost again in Phili, but this was mostly a game of Memphis not hitting it's jumpers and also missing star Rudy Gay.  Gay missed the game due to "a bad travel day".  What a strange excuse, let's wait and see if there is any blowback from it, but Gay said in his return to practice yesterday, "I didn't intend for that to happen. I would never abandon my teammates".

Houston:
Last Weeks Games: 3-0
1. Win vs. Memphis 121-96
2. Win @ Chicago 120-97
3. Win @ Minny 87-84

Upcoming Games:
1. Tonight @ San Antonio 8:30
2. Dec 29th @ OKC 8:00
3. Dec 31st vs. Atlanta 7:00
4.  Jan 2nd vs. New Orleans 8:00

The BIG story of the week in the southwest division, was the dominant performances of the Houston Rockets. Clutch City was represented well as Houston won 3 games against quality opponents.  Houston dismantled Memphis, forcing 19 turnovers allowing them to do what they do best: Run. As mentioned above, Houston outscored Memphis by 30 points on the fast break. The Rockets followed up that game with yet another enormous victory on Christmas day beating Chicago by 23 and doing so while wearing the ugliest uniforms displayed on Xmas (sorry Rocket fans, those ugly gray unis were the worst of the Xmas day bunch). The win, 23 points, could have easily been 30.  Chicago was outclassed in all phases of the game.  I know I've said it many time so far this year, but Chandler Parsons is a beast. He has incredible energy to go along with his high skill level.  I love this kids game.

Lastly, they took down Minny by 3, displaying defense in this effort.  James Harden and Jeremy Lin look to finally be in-sync with each other, making them one of the most dangerous backcourts in the game.  They spread the court in the half-court game and they can get out and run like few backcourt combos have been able to do in NBA history.  I really like this team and what Kevin McHale is doing.  Also to note, in the previous 4 wins, Omer Asik is averaging 15 points and 15.4 rebounds. I know they won't win it all this year, but I think they may only be a piece away from challenging for the Larry O'Brien trophy.

Yikes, a terrible week for Dallas in dropping all 4 of its games.  Sure, they played some of the best in the NBA, but they looked terrible in doing so.  The only game they were truly competitive in was the OKC loss and it took a Darren Collison miracle shot to send them into OT.  I have nothing nice to say about this team right now, but enjoy this Collison clip if you missed it.

At least they won a game.  The western conferences worst team (yes, worse than Sacramento) managed to win its 6th game against an under-performing Indiana bunch. The three great pieces of news for New Orleans is the great play from Anthony Davis, Robin Lopez and, Greivis Vasquez.  Since I've gushed over Davis at length previously, I wont talk about him here, but I think we need to recognize what his two teammates are doing.  Vasquez is 5th in the NBA in assists, and is shooting nearly 45% during the teams past 5 games, showing great improvement from the rest of his season.  Vasquez is a poor defender and I personally dislike his game, but i must admit he's playing well.  Then there is Robin Lopez. The career 6.5 points per game scorer, is averaging 12.3 points and over 2 blocks.  In the win against Indiana, Lopez looked like his brother Brook, in dropping a season high 29 points, this after scoring 24 the previous game. Lopez is average 18.8 and 7.4 in his last 5.  He is a contender for most improved player this season, although there are some pretty strong contenders this season. It's nice to see his improvement on the glass as well as in the scoring department.
